Seeing competition being bought by Google is somewhat interesting. Seeing that happen after the acquisition of Writely, and the launch of Google Docs & Spreadsheets just a few weeks ago, felt even more interesting. Given the fact that Google already had quite a compelling Writable Web offering (even though D&S aren't fully integrated with each other), I can only explain this as a competitive takeover and the acquisition of an engineering team. The Jot investors will find themselves an early return, as well, and this might be the main message behind this news item: be careful when you trust your data into the hands of a hosted service. You never know where it will end up. Especially VC-funded companies with a inherently shorter term exit plan are prone to sell your data to another company.

That doesn't sound nice, isn't it? Well, it's just another way to look at what happened.
